The Car Search Begins - 2018 Mazda 6 | Ijeoma Kola

The Car Search Begins

Although we don’t yet have a car, Jonathan and I are seriously considering getting one in the next coming months. We live a bit outside of New York City, so close enough to get around without a car, but our adult lives – laundry, grocery shopping, visiting family – would be WAY easier if we had a car. Plus, walking to the train in the dead of winter is not cute. So when Mazda invited us to their NYC appreciation party earlier this week, we eagerly and curiously attended!

Growing up, my parents always drove Japanese cars. At one point or another, they had an Isuzu, Sukuzi, Honda, Toyota, and Mitsubishi, so I’m familiar with those car companies. I knew pretty little about Mazda – except for their iconic slogan, Zoom Zoom – so I was super curious to learn about the 2018 Mazda 6 and see how it compared to cars that I was familiar with!

When we’re in the car together, Jonathan almost always drives, so he was the one who test drove the 2018 Mazda 6. I’ll let him share his thoughts!

The Mazda 6 drove very smoothly! A very smooth ride, though it was a bit low to the ground. There were a lot of driver assist features – which are helpful in a city. While going around the block, a biker approached us from the rear and the car beeped to alert me. The Mazda 6 had a 360 camera view, which was also helpful. I really liked the smart display. The interior design was also very sleek and comfortable.

Now if you know Jonathan, you know it’s hard to get more than two sentences out of him, so this is impressive! From a passenger’s perspective, I thought the seats were comfortable, and I loved that the rear seats could be heated. When you live in a cold city, that’s crucial! Compared to other mid-sized sedans I’ve been in, the 2018 Mazda 6 Signature definitely felt more sleek and sexy. Mazda’s focus is on great design, and I think they definitely outdo their competitors on that front. Perfect for us aesthetic-oriented millennials!

The Mazda Party!

Ijeoma Kola & Carla Hall at the Mazda Appreciation Party

Once we were done with the test drive, we headed inside to enjoy the food, drinks, and entertainment! Since we were one of the first to arrive, we got to chat for a few minutes with the amazing chef Carla Hall from ABC’s The Chew! I love how simple but elevated The Chew recipes are, and I am always rooting for everybody black, so meeting Carla was an honor! She’s just as hilarious and personable in person as she is on TV! We chatted about our love for eyeglasses, natural hair, and the best kind of African cuisine. Jonathan of course said Kenyan, I obviously said Nigerian, but Carla is a huge fan of Senegalese! Carla is of Yoruba heritage, so we also chatted about both being Nigerian!

Carla curated the party menu, which had an amazing assortment of her signature Southern cajun  inspired cuisine. Jonathan had several of the open faced chicken sandwiches, while I couldn’t get enough of the crab cakes and braised short ribs on grit cakes! So. good. The drinks were strong and tasty too!

  1. What you say, a new ride I’m always down for anything new. A new car for you and Jonathan I’m too happy. I don’t know to much about riding trains but I love the opportunity to have my own ride to go when and where I want to by myself. I can’t wait to see what you and Jonathan chose for your 1st ?.
