Why I’m Thankful For My Kinky Hair

Kinky haired beauties — myself included — can spend a lot of time whining, complaining, and fussing over our hair. We get frustrated with long detangling hours, never ending knots, breakage, dryness, shrinkage, lack of curl definition; you name it, we’ve ranted about it. However, part of what it will take for us to re-brand our hair as not only normal but also beautiful involves us embracing our hair — as is. That’s why I decided, in this week and season of Thanksgiving, to reflect on why I am thankful for my hair.

I’m thankful that my kinky hair doesn’t shed all over clothing and furniture.
I’m thankful that my kinky hair doesn’t clog up shower drains.
I’m thankful that my kinky hair grows out towards the heavens.
I’m thankful that my kinky hair rises in its glory as the day goes by.
I’m thankful that my kinky hair is so divalicious that it rejects the common comb.
I’m thankful that my kinky hair can be worn in one style that can accommodate exercise, work, and a formal event all in the same day.
I’m thankful that my kinky hair can magically grow 3 inches overnight (hey shrinkage).
I’m thankful that my kinky hair has liberated me from western notions of beauty.
I’m thankful that my kinky hair has saved me thousands of dollars.
I’m thankful that my kinky hair cannot be emulated, whereas I can always straighten my kinks.
I’m thankful that my kinky hair grows even when it appears not to.
I’m thankful that my kinky hair inspires some, confuses others, and fascinates a few.
I’m thankful that my kinky hair is the hair God blessed me with.

  1. AMEN! I found myself really complaining about my hair the other day. I was being such a Negative Nancy. I stopped and immediately thanked God that I had a head full of hair.
