Lemon essential oil has a fresh, citrus scent which is inhaled to relieve depression and mental fatigue. This aromatherapy oil which is extracted from the peel of Citrus limon, is also used to treat acne, constipation, and high blood pressure. Here are a few reasons why lemon essential oil is great for natural hair, a few DIY recipes you can use to incorporate lemon aromatherapy oil into your hair care regimen, and a list of some products that contain lemon oil.
Lemon Anti-Dandruff Hair Rinse
Lemon essential oil is an effective natural remedy for dandruff. It can be mixed with apple cider vinegar which inhibits the growth of the yeasts associated with dandruff by balancing the scalp’s pH.
Recipe
36 drops lemon essential oil + 1 oz (30 ml) apple cider vinegar + 2 oz (60 ml) water
To prepare this lemon hair rinse, mix all the ingredients in a dark bottle.
To use this anti-dandruff hair rinse, shampoo and condition the hair as normal before pouring the hair rinse on the scalp. Massage it into the scalp for a few minutes before rinsing it with cool water to close the hair cuticle.
Lemon Oily Hair Mask
Lemon essential oil is used to manage oily hair since it balances the production of sebum (oil) by the scalp. It can be formulated into a hair mask by mixing it with egg whites since they also reduce the amount of oil produced by glands on the scalp. This natural hair pack can be made more potent by adding lavender essential oil since because it also balances scalp sebum production.
Recipe
12 drops lemon essential oil + 12 drops lavender essential oil + 2 egg whites
To prepare this lemon hair mask, mix all the ingredients in a bowl.
To use this oily hair mask, massage it onto the scalp and smooth it over the hair before wearing a shower cap for at least 30 minutes. Rinse off the mask with cool water before shampooing and conditioning the hair.
Lemon Thinning Hair Scalp Massage Oil
Lemon essential oil is used for thinning hair because it boosts the growth of hair. It can be diluted with carrier oils that stimulate hair growth like castor oil and used to make a scalp massage oil.
Recipe
36 drops lemon essential oil + 2 oz (60 ml) castor oil + 1 oz (30 ml) castor oil
To prepare this lemon scalp massage oil, mix all the ingredients in a dark bottle.
To use this thinning hair oil, massage it onto the bald areas on the scalp at least once a day.
Lemon Essential Oil Safety Precautions
Lemon essential oil should not be used by persons with low blood pressure. Persons who will be exposing their hair to sunlight within the next 12 to 24 hours should also avoid products with this aromatherapy oil as it can lighten hair.
In addition, ensure that you do not use lemon fragrance oil instead of lemon essential oil to make your natural hair care products since the artificial fragrance oil does not have the healing benefits.
