Madam CJ Walker Beauty Culture Jamaican Black Castor & Murumuru Oils Review

A few weeks ago I gave you guys a heads up on the new Madam C.J. Walker Beauty Culture collection by Sundial Brands that’s available at Sephora. Though there are four lines, one of them is specifically for curly/coily – and I’m gonna go ahead and add kinky hair to the list – the Curl Enhancing Jamaican Black Castor and Murumuru Oils line. I received 5 of the 9 products in the line and tested them on my hair!

About Murumuru Oil

You probably know what Jamaican Black Castor Oil does and why it’s good for your hair, but what the heck is murumuru oil? I’ve done the research and it turns out the oil comes from the seed of the fruits produced from a species of palm trees native to Brazil. It protects your hair like a silicone, but without clogging your pores, meaning that it can help your hair retain moisture and soften particularly coarse hair! Let’s get into the products:

Pure Clarifying Shampoo w/ ACV

Madam CJ Walker Beauty Culture Jamaican Black Castor & Murumuru Oils Clarifying Shampoo | KlassyKinks

Ingredients: Water, Sodium Lauroyl Methyl Isethionate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Astrocaryum Murumuru Seed Butter, Vinegar, Hydrolyzed Keratin, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Aqua (and) Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein PG-Propyl Silanetriol, Tocopherol, Urtica Dioica (Nettle) Leaf Extract, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride (Coconut Oil), Coco Glucoside, Hydrolyzed Keratin, Algin, Chitosan, Gellan Gum, Glycerin (Vegetable), Caprylhydroxamic Acid, Caprylyl Glycol, Fragrance (Essential Oil Blend).

I’ve tried a couple of sulfate-free shampoos that claimed to be clarifying, but this bad boy left my hair stripped CLEAN. Now you might think that’s a bad thing, but I do think there’s some utility in getting all the gunk out of your hair and starting with a clean slate every once in a while. I feel like I could run a marathon, bathe in mud, and then roll around in sand before using this shampoo, and it would all come out with just one wash. I’ll be using this for times when I need a deep clean.

Ultra-Moisturizing Co-Wash

Ingredients:Water, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Capric/Caprylic Triglycerides (Coconut Oil), Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Glyceryl Stearate, Stearyl Alcohol, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Behentrimonium Chloride, Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Astrocaryum Murumuru Seed Butter, Cetyl Alcohol, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Rosa Canina Fruit Oil, Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil, Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil, Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Glycerin (Vegetable), Tocopherol, Panthenol, Hydrolyzed Keratin, Hydrolyzed Rice Protein, Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil, Salvia Officinalis (Sage) Leaf Extract, Urtica Dioica Leaf (Nettle) Extract, Equisetum Arvense (Horsetail) Extract, Polyquaternium-7, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Gellan Gum, Coco-Glucoside, Algin, Chitosan, Caprylyl Glycol, Caprylhydroxamic Acid, Fragrance (Essential Oil Blend).

Considering I used this product after shampooing twice with the Clarifying Shampoo, I can’t attest to its cleansing capabilities. I also am not too confident that it can detangle alone, but it likely doesn’t tangle or dry out your hair as much as the clarifying shampoo. I’ll have to use it alone again before I give an objective opinion.

Ultra-Moisturizing Detangler

Ingredients:Water, Glycerin (Vegetable), Dimethicone, Glyceryl Stearate, Cetyl Alcohol, Cetrimonium Chloride, Polyquaternium-7, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Glyceryl Stearate Citrate, Cetearyl Alcohol, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Astrocaryum Murumuru Seed Butter, Panthenol, Hydrolyzed Collagen PG-Propyl Methylsilanediol, Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein PG-Propyl Silanetriol, Urtica Dioica Leaf Extract, Althaea Officinalis Root Extract, Orbignya Oleifera (Babassu) Seed Oil, Caprylhydroxamic Acid, Caprylyl Glycol, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride (Coconut Oil), Coco-Glucoside, Hydrolyzed Keratin, Algin, Chitosan, Gellan Gum, Glyceryl Caprylate, Fragrance (Essential Oil Blend).

Loved this stuff! It was creamy enough to glide through my hair and did detangle my hair quite well, despite the multiple shampoos and no pre-wash detangling or pre-pooing.

Twist, Lock & Seal Lotion

Madam CJ Walker Beauty Culture Jamaican Black Castor & Murumuru Oils Twist, Lock & Seal Lotion | KlassyKinks

Water, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Oimethicone, Cetyl Alcohol, Glyceryl Stearate, Stearyl Alcohol, Maltodextrin/VP Copolymer, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Glyceryl Stearate Citrate, Cetearyl Alcohol, Glycerin (Vegetable), Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Astrocaryum Murumuru Seed Butter, Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein PG-Propyl Silanetriol, Hydrolyzed Keratin, Althaea Officinalis Root Extract, Urtica Dioica Leaf Extract, Caprylhydroxamic Acid, Caprylyl Glycol, Glyceryl Caprylate, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride (Coconut Oil), Coco-Glucoside, Algin, Chitosan, Gellan Gum, Fragrance (Essential Oil Blend).

You don’t need a lot, so even though I used a lot, don’t be like me. This lotion has a light and earthy smell reminiscent of cologne, and leaves your hair soft yet defined. Between the detangler and this though, one or both left my hair with tons of flakes, so definitely work on your portions.

Ingredients: Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Fragrance (Essential Oil Blend).

I had issues with the pump applicator since castor oil is so viscous, but otherwise it’s pretty much just castor oil.

Here are the products I didn’t receive: Ultra-Moisturizing ConditionerDefining Butter Crème, Loosen and Stretch Gel, and the Edge Control & Shape Paste.

Braidout with Madam CJ Walker Beauty Culture Jamaican Black Castor & Murumuru Oils

Final Thoughts

So I used all these products to do a braidout that turned out really well defined and hydrated! My only complaint was that I had flakes errwhere and some. Like EVERYWHERE. And I was wearing black ?. I’m also just OVER the lack of length and density in the front section of my hair where I have damage, and since I didn’t feel like separating the braidout immediately, I just wore a hat to compliment the look. The next day, I separated my braidout and was left with voluminous and hydrated hair for Easter!

  1. Does this product work if you have oily scalp and losing hair? I have alopenia, I think? I have a Doctors appointment because I’m taking a thyroid medication and Doctor says all my levels are fine but the top part of my head is losing hair. I don’t know if its due to stress or just thyroid. Please respond. thanks

  2. I’ve been searching everywhere to find out what on earth oimethicone is. But no where on Google it anywhere she’d any light in it. It’s listed as an ingredient in the twist, lock and seal lotion. Do you know?

    1. I actually have no idea! Maybe it was a spelling error and they meant dimethicone? It’s best to reach out to the company directly for clarification.

  3. Thanks for the honest review. Helped the pj in me to make a decision —especially since these products are not cheap! 🙂
