Mizani has reformulated and relaunched a True Textures line of salon professional haircare products for us naturalistas! Unlike other salon-quality natural hair products, Mizani formulated this line free of sulfates, parabens, and petrolatum, which quickly caught my attention because I’m becoming increasingly conscious of what I put on and in my hair, skin, and body and will probably phase out all skin, hair, and makeup products with paraben in 2016. I attended the True Textures launch party at Dop Dop Salon in NYC and was able to get an inside look at how the products work!
The Mizani Team
Mizani’s Director of Marketing, Tumi Soyinka and Mizani’s Director of Education, Kate Truesdale both helped open up the event with some information about the True Textures Line, which has coconut, olive, and marula oils to smooth, condition, and hydrate hair while retaining the integrity of our beautiful curls. Mizani, which means balance in Swahili, did have a True Textures line a few years ago, but decided to reformulate it to address the needs of naturals: moisture and hold with no bad ingredients and absolutely no flaking! They then handed the mic over to the three Mizani stylist experts who showed us how the products were used to create three very textured looks on three different heads of hair.
Twist Out into a Mohawk on Kinky Hair
Stylist Reece gave her model, who came in with tightly coiled hair, a defined three strand twistout using the Style Refresher Milk and the Twist and Coil Jelly. She then brushed up the sides for a half mohawk that could later be turned into a pompadour or a full mohawk.
Tex Waves on Kinky Curly Hair
Stylist Pekela Riley started by lightly blow drying her model’s hair to create volume, then coiling her hair around a curler to create textured waves without heat damage. She used the Style Refresher Milk for light hold that also protects against heat, and went in with her finger through the roots to create volume without loosing texture.
Spiral Curls on Wavy Hair
Stylist Ashley used the Curl Enhancing Lotion and Twist and Coil Jelly to set her model, who had wavy hair, on Mizani Spiral Lacers (sort of like flexirods, pic below) to create spiral curls. The set was moveable without any crunch or flaking!

Mizani True Textures Collection
The collection includes a Moisture Replenish Shampoo, Moisture Replenish Conditioner, a Cream Cleansing Conditioner (cowash), Intense Moisture Replenish Treatment (deep conditioner), Curl Enhancing Lotion (for looser curls), Curl Define Pudding (light hold), Twist and Coil Jelly (stronger hold), and Style Refresher Milk. It is available for purchase through the Mizani website, and also at select salons around the nation.
Keep in mind that there are some bottles of the old True Textures formulation still on the web (ie. on Amazon), so be sure you’re purchasing the new ones!
I will most definitely be trying this line. All the styles created on the models really represents how all textures of the natural hair spectrum are equally gorgeous. Great job Mizani.
I’m looking forward to trying out the products!
Sounds good, I weren’t aware this line was produced by Mizani.
