My Favorite Natural Hair Salons in NYC & NJ

Even though I’m a huge advocate of learning how to take care of your natural hair by yourself, I also believe in visiting trained stylists regularly to assess the health and progress of your hair. Plus any major hair changes you’d like to undergo – from color to a sleek blowout to drastic cuts – should probably be left to a professional. Here are my favorite natural hair salons in NYC and the NJ metro area.

Devachan Soho

for curly cuts and color for all textures

One of the pioneers of the curly cut method where natural hair is cut dry and strand by strand, Devachan Salon in Soho, NYC is a great option for naturals of all hair textures who need to have their hair cut or shaped. Devachan also is great at hair color, from single process to pintura highlights. Keep in mind that they specialize in wash and go styling, so if you’re looking for a rod set or bantu knots, this isn’t the best place for you.

P.S. One of my hair crushes gets her hair done there too!

Twistout by Beleza Natural Salon

Beleza Natural Harlem

for long lasting twistouts

A newcomer on 125th Street in Harlem, Beleza Natural is a Brazilian salon transplant that is quickly becoming a staple for NYC naturalistas. If your hair needs some TLC and a gentle wash, condition, and a twistout, you’ll find exactly that at Beleza. Their salon is really large and well designed – just make sure to call ahead so you properly understand what service you’re getting. There are a bunch of options and they’re a bit confusing! Once I was there, I had an amazing experience and my defined twistout lasted a really long time!

Keep in mind that if you are picky/mindful about product ingredients, this salon isn’t the best option for you as some of the Beleza Natural hair products contain parabens.

Valerie Signature Salon

for ultimate hair knowledge

Another Harlem staple, Valerie is SO knowledgeable about natural hair and natural hair care – she’s been in the business for decades! If you’re new to natural hair, or are struggling with damaged hair, Valerie is the best person to visit. She’s both gentle and knowledgeable, but is also up to date on the latest techniques, methods, products, and herbal remedies. Her salon is small, so definitely a more homely vibe than the first two salons, so clear out your schedule and come ready to chit chat and learn from Valerie while she blesses your hair!

Red. by RubyRedRoots

for multi dimensional color and face framing cuts

Located in South Orange, New Jersey, Barri Gibson’s salon has been my go to NJ salon! Barri’s responsible for some of my recent major hair transformations – from my beautiful hair color that has evolved from bright red to copper to a warm brown to my silk press and bob haircut at the end of 2018! Of all the times I’ve colored my hair, this most recent color treatment with Barri has been the healthiest, and I’m super excited to see how my hair looks in its curly state with this new cut!

Neil Farinah Salon

for stress free protective styles and healthy haircare

Nyasia at Neil Farinah Salon in Brooklyn did my hair all throughout summer 2019, and whether she was tasked with a crown braid, installing clips ins, or custom coloring a wig, every time she touched my hair I left her chair extremely pleased. She blow dried my hair several times, and gently reminded me that I needed a trim, and thanks to her, my hair is now healthier than its ever been.

  1. I need an appointment. I am tired of stylist who don’t understand 4C hair but think they are hair genius by cutting all my hair off.

  2. I agree professional work should be left up to licensed beautician on specific styles on your hair. I know that there are things I want attempt to do ever again to my hair from bad experiences.
