I was recently gifted this set of handmade natural hair products by Samantha of Kinky Coily Love, and have been having a blast trying them on my hair. Considering my own shea butter/coconut oil/aloe vera gel mix was on it’s last breath, these products came at the perfect time! They are available for purchase on the Kinky Coily Love Etsy page, or you can try your luck at winning all four products in the giveaway we’re hosting.
Collection Description
The Shealoe Whipped Shea Butter is made with aloe vera gel and a choice of coconut oil or olive oil, and is meant to moisturize or seal depending on your preference. 4 oz/$5.00, 8 oz/$8.50
The Whipped Coconut Shea Body and Hair Butter is made with shea butter, a choice of either coconut oil or olive oil, argan oil, avocado oil and castor oil, and is meant to be applied to the body to soften skin or to the hair as a sealant. 4 oz/$5.00, 8 oz/$8.50
The All Natural Grease Alternative is an alternative to traditional greases that tend to have mineral oil, petroleum and other unnatural and harmful ingredients that make hair dry. Made with organic beeswax, a choice of coconut oil or olive oil and shea butter, this can be used to oil the scalp or seal hair. It also provides a nice shine to hair. 4 oz/$5.00, 8 oz/$10.00
The Chamomile Leave in Conditioner Spritz is a leave in conditioner that softens hair, enhances curls and gives a light hold. Made with a botanic infusion of water, aloe vera gel, vitamin E and fragrance. 2 oz/$5.00. 4 oz/$6.50.
Shealoe Whipped Shea Butter
KK: Consistency of semi-soft butter, smells fragrant but not overbearing. Applied throughout hair during post-wash moisturizing session and before resetting hair in twists or braids before bed.
Whipped Coconut Shea Hair and Body Butter
KK: Truly the consistency of hardened butter, but emulsifies easily. Smells slightly less fragrant than the shealoe, but not nutty. Used once on hair strands and subsequently on ends as a sealant.
All Natural Grease Alternative
KK: Smells rather nutty, but the scent fades. Melts immediately in fingers. Used both on scalp and on length of hair as a “top coat” after braiding up.
Chamomile Leave in Conditioner Spritz
KK: Smells chemically (non-floral, not citrusy, non coconut or shea-y… so I’m not sure). Pressure is somewhere between a mist and a spray. As the leave-in is used up, it leaves a filmy residue on the inside of the spray bottle.
Final Thoughts
My hair did not get along with the Chamomile Leave-in at all! I tried it twice, and both times, my hair just didn’t feel soft and well moisturized like it does when I use one of my Carol’s Daughter leave in sprays. Perhaps it’s better as a daily refresher spray, but I don’t use those. I’m largely ambivalent about the Grease Alternative, as I don’t often go for shiny hair often, and I prefer more liquid-based oils for my scalp. It’s hard to describe the difference between the Whipped Shea Butter and the Shealoe, but my hair strands felt more moisturized using the Shealoe over the Whipped Shea Butter. In fact, I’ve been using the Shealoe religiously all over (it even makes an appearance in my updated regimen video & post that’ll come next month), and the Whipped Shea on the ends of twists and braids and such. I should also mention that I got the option with coconut oil, knowing that my hair prefers that over olive oil. I could definitely see the Whipped Shea working better than the Shealoe on someone else’s hair. None of these products offer substantial hold for a long-lasting and well defined style, but they sure will moisturize your hair. In the future, I would love to see a Kinky Coily Love product with a more custard consistency that will provide hold, as well as prettier packaging. But for the very low cost and all-natural products, Kinky Coily Love has essentially taken away any desire I had to whip up a batch of shea butter on my own!
Here’s a photo of a braid out that I did using these products exclusively, right after my cornrows & curlformers debacle.
The price point is great but uncertain about the products.
