Protective Styling Prep with SheaMoisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil

Protective Styling Prep with SheaMoisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil

For the last few weeks, between the weather change and having a lot of school related tasks – like oral exams (which I passed!) – I’ve been hiding my hair away under a protective style. While the main purpose of the style was to give myself one less thing to worry about, it was also time for me to give my hair a break. Especially now that I have my new fall hair color, I am being extra careful not to revisit my breakage & balding scare from last year.

How I Colored and Styled My Kinky Curly Yaki U-Part Wig

Even though the majority of my hair has been tucked away for two weeks or so at a time, I still wanted to restore and repair my strands from the stress of the various heat styling, rod sets, color, and product experimenting I’ve been doing all year. That’s why I used SheaMoisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen & Grow Shampoo and SheaMoisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen & Grow Conditioner to prep my hair for protective styling.

SheaMoisture’s Jamaican Black Castor Oil collection helps restore and repair chemically processed, color treated (that’s me!), and heat styled hair by fortifying and renewing your strands while also supporting healthy hair growth. You’ve probably heard of Jamaican Black Castor Oil as the Holy Grail product for your edges, and SheaMoisture uses natural and certified organic ingredients so you can trust you’re getting the real deal. I was able to find these at Walmart in the general Hair Care aisle – NOT in the back corner of the ethnic/multicultural aisle.

After shampooing, conditioning, and finger detangling my hair, I put it into 8 braids/plaits because I can barely cornrow *hides face in shame.* Luckily my wig is voluminous enough that it doesn’t require a flat base, so I just secure it right on top of those chunky braids. For the hair that I left out, I use Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen & Grow Leave-In Conditioner which is BOMB, and just two strand or flat twist it so it can blend more easily with the texture of the wig.

I feel like most people know of SheaMoisture’s Coconut & Hibiscus line, but for people with coarse and high porosity hair like mine, the Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen & Grow line does a much better job of creating long-lasting moisture.

As we get into the holiday season and the weather gets colder and colder, it’s important to re-evaluate your current hair routine and see if there are any changes you need to make to improve the health of your hair. Fall is a great time to focus on repairing and restoring your hair with SheaMoisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen & Grow Shampoo, Conditioner, and Leave-In Conditioner while protective styling either with extensions or with your own hair. My wedding is now just a few months away and I want to make sure I have healthy hair underneath my veil, so that’s been my motivation! What’s yours?
